At this age, 3 and 4 years old, we hear, "I can do it myself." One of our goals is to develop independence and provide opportunities for children to be self-sufficient. When students arrive at school, it is their job to unpack their backpack, put their lunch in their cubby, folder in the basket, water bottle on the tray, and nap bedding in containers in the hallway. During work/lesson time, it is their responsibility to choose a work and get their own rug. After they have finished their work, they replace the materials and make it ready for the next person. During this first month, we give direct lessons on carrying a tray, stand/walk in a line and rolling a work rug. We also learn the areas of the classroom and how to be independent in the bathroom. At every moment, we give students the opportunity to, "do it myself". Laying a strong foundation will make for a smooth year.
